Dear readers,

As the OVERLEAF project approaches its conclusion, we are proud to share a major highlight from last month that encapsulates the ambition, collaboration, and innovation that have driven this project forward: the OVERLEAF Final Event at AeroDays 2025 in Warsaw. This high-level event marked a fitting culmination to years of intensive research into liquid hydrogen storage for aviation and launched two cornerstone dissemination tools, the Innovation Handbook and the Technical Brochure, which ensure that our findings will continue to inform and inspire.

OVERLEAF Final Event at AeroDays 2025

Held on May 8th, within the framework of Europe’s flagship aviation R&I conference, AeroDays 2025, the OVERLEAF Final Event showcased groundbreaking progress in clean aviation fuel systems. With over 1,000 participants from across the aviation ecosystem, the event provided the perfect platform to present the technical maturity and potential of OVERLEAF’s cryogenic hydrogen storage technology.

Our dedicated two-hour session, “Advancements in Liquid Hydrogen Storage Technology and Future Scenarios”, brought together all project partners to reveal the full scope of our innovation: from cryogenic-ready 3D printing to advanced materials and safety systems. The centerpiece? A functional tank capable of storing 105 kg of liquid hydrogen at 23–27 K and 1–6 bar pressure for up to 14 hours, with minimal boil-off.

Beyond the dedicated session, OVERLEAF’s participation in the ClimAvTech cluster session alongside seven other EU-funded projects demonstrated the collaborative spirit driving European aviation research. This joint presentation highlighted the synergistic relationship between multiple research initiatives working toward the common goal of climate-neutral aviation.

The OVERLEAF project booth, equipped with key dissemination materials, including the project’s Handbook and Brochure, alongside a miniature replica of the hydrogen storage tank, provided conference attendees with hands-on engagement opportunities.

Two key dissemination formats

To ensure long-lasting impact, the Final Event also introduced two key publications that document and communicate OVERLEAF’s results for a wide range of audiences: industry stakeholders, policymakers, researchers, and beyond.

The Technical Brochure

This 21-page publication is a deep dive into the project’s technological core. It provides comprehensive documentation of the tank’s modular architecture, additive manufacturing process, composite materials, and insulation systems. From the Inner Tank’s basalt fibre-reinforced polyamide design to the advanced optical hydrogen sensors developed by TU Delft, the Brochure is a detailed account of the innovations that make safe, efficient hydrogen storage possible.

Engineers and technical experts will find in this document a rich repository of ideas and technologies ready to be scaled and adapted to real-world applications.

The Innovation Handbook

Spanning 42 pages, the Innovation Handbook is a strategic resource that goes beyond the technical to tell the bigger story: how OVERLEAF contributes to the future of hydrogen-powered flight. Framed as “The First Step Toward Hydrogen-Powered Aviation,” it presents a visionary outlook, linking each technological advance to its broader application in the decarbonisation of air transport.

The Handbook explores:

• Market integration pathways

• Sustainability and fuel efficiency metrics

• Industrial scale-up scenarios

• Intellectual property and safety advances

Looking ahead

The success of our Final Event, and the rich content of these two dissemination formats, proves that European innovation in aviation is alive and thriving. Through collaboration, rigorous research, and a shared vision for sustainability, OVERLEAF has set a new benchmark for clean fuel systems in aerospace.

As the project concludes in October 2025, these outcomes ensure that our work continues to inform the path ahead. We invite you to explore both the Technical Brochure and Innovation Handbook, available now on our project website, and to share them widely within your networks.
